Entering school band for cello?

I know I should have started earlier, but I've never really thought about an instrument until now. I'm 16, going into 11th grade and want to take band for cello. If I start now, I'd have to take beginning, but this is something i REALLY want. Should I? or will their expectations be too high at this point?
